Trade Secret Lawsuit Settled Between Qualcomm and Former Engineer

By: Aaron Kim, ITMG Insider Threat Analyst

Qualcomm Technologies has settled its lawsuit against a former engineer who was accused of stealing confidential information before accepting a position with an unnamed rival company, according to the lawsuit.

According to the lawsuit, Qualcomm security personnel discovered that Kathuria uploaded “hundreds” of files from Qualcomm’s network in December and January to his personal email and cloud storage accounts without permission. However, the security software successfully blocked some file transfers, so Kathuria allegedly took hundreds of screenshots of those files and transferred the images. On Feb. 1, company security personnel interviewed Kathuria regarding the file upload activities and that is when Qualcomm became aware that Kathuria had accepted a job with an unnamed Qualcomm competitor around Jan. 21.

The lawsuit did not say whether Kathuria joined that company or identify it by name. Kathuria has not responded to the claims in court.

The settlement comes less than two months after Qualcomm sued Gaurav Kathuria for trade secret misappropriation. The details of the settlement were not disclosed.
