Court Rejects Medidata Lawsuit Against Veeva for Lack of Evidence, Blocks Medidata’s Moves to Limit Competition and Employee Rights
Despite a lack of evidence to support a case, Medidata filed the trade secret suit in 2017 against Veeva and five former Medidata employees in an attempt to block Veeva from innovating in the clinical data management market and intimidate Medidata employees to prevent them from joining Veeva, the emerging leader.
Medidata had many opportunities to drop the baseless suit over the past five years – including after the 2019 acquisition by Dassault Systèmes – but chose not to, causing needless harm to many. The case caused confusion to mutual customers, harmed employees on both sides, and cost the two sides combined an estimated $40 million.
Marriott Plays Down 20GB Data Breach
Cybersecurity at Marriott International is under scrutiny once again this week after hackers reportedly stole 20GB of data from one of its hotels in the US.
The hotel giant claimed that a threat actor managed to socially engineer an “associate” at the BWI Airport Marriott in Baltimore, Maryland, enabling them to exfiltrate data from that individual’s computer.
The group added that this was an isolated incident, contained within a few hours, and that it had “no evidence that the threat actor had access beyond the files that were accessible to this one associate,” according to DataBreaches.net.
Man to Repay $45K he Embezzled from Beer Distributor Fabiano Bros. in ‘Cold, Calculated’ Crime
An Essexville man has a year to repay a five-figure sum he embezzled from Michigan’s largest beer wholesaler.
Police reports contained in court files state Fabera had worked as a delivery driver for Fabiano Brothers. In late July 2021, police met with Chief Operating Officer John Bicknell who reported Fabera had stolen a large sum of money.
Fabera would deliver the correct amount of ordered alcohol to a store, accept cash payment for it, then void the original invoice to state he had delivered less, Bicknell said. Fabera would then pocket the difference, he said.
Jury Convicts Man of $600 Million Health Care Fraud, Wire Fraud, and ID Theft Scheme
According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Mathew James, 54, of East Northport, operated a medical billing company that billed for procedures that were either more serious or entirely different than those James’ doctor-clients performed. James directed his doctor-clients to schedule elective surgeries through the emergency room so that insurance companies would reimburse at substantially higher rates. When insurance companies denied the inflated claims, James impersonated patients to demand that the insurance companies pay the outstanding balances of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.
